Zazzle Featured Seller Interview with JillsPaperie

June 30, 2011

Jill, from the Zazzle store JillsPaperie, talks to us about her time as a Zazzler.  Check out the interview below and don’t forget to check out her store JillsPaperie!

Coupon Organizer Black Polka Dot Pink Binder

Zazzle: Give us a brief bio, where you are from and when you started making art.

Jill: My name is Jill and I live in Georgia.  Art has always been my favorite thing to do, and a talent that God has blessed me with.  As a small child, I drew designs on rocks and gave them to customers at the fabric store where my mom worked.  In high school I was an active art club member.  I was also an apprentice to an elementary school art teacher, which led me to earn a degree in Early Childhood Education and to become a teacher.  In August 2009 I created The Pink Schoolhouse, and then Jill’s Paperie several months later.  I am now a full-time Zazzler!

Zazzle: What’s your favorite Zazzle product to create?

Jill: I enjoy creating invitations because it makes me feel good when someone chooses my design for their special occasion.  I also like binders because they are so versatile.

Zazzle: What’s your inspiration for your designs?

Jill: Current trends inspire me.  For example, the explosion in the popularity of using coupons led me to create the coupon binders which are a favorite at Jill’s Paperie right now.  I am also inspired by my friends who are teachers.  I try to create designs for The Pink Schoolhouse that I think they would like.

Zazzle: How would you describe your style?

Jill: My style is trendy, interesting, and fun.  I hope my designs make people smile!

Camping Party Invitations

Zazzle: When you’re not creating art, what are your other hobbies?

Jill: I am a youth director at my church, along with my husband.  We also enjoy taking road trips to National Parks and other interesting places across America.  So far, we have traveled 22 states by car.  I enjoy fashion magazines and shopping the sale racks at the mall as well!

Zazzle: What’s your favorite Zazzle feature? How do you use it?

Jill: I use the ability to see the number of views each product has received within a certain period of time to know what to create more of in the near future.

Zazzle: Do you have any fun stories about being a seller on Zazzle?

Jill: Last year I was privileged to be asked to participate in career day at the elementary school where my friend is a teacher.  I spoke to the children about being an artist and I showed them how I create my designs.

Zazzle: What got you interested in selling your art on Zazzle?

Jill: Most people wish they could make a living doing what they love, and this is sometimes even more of a challenge for artists.  When I discovered Zazzle, I saw it as a great way to get my art seen around the world on products that people could actually personalize and use.  Once my products started selling, I was hooked!

Zazzle: What tips can you give someone who is just starting out on Zazzle?

Jill: It can’t be said enough that it requires a lot of patience and hard work to succeed as a Zazzle seller!  Designing is only a small part of what a good seller does.  Finished products need good tags and descriptions – and don’t forget to promote them!  If you are creating a niche store, find a fresh and unique way to present your theme.  Research your topic and get to know your target customers.

Thanks Jill!

Seller Wednesday – Guest Blog by HahpiStuff

June 29, 2011

Shannon, aka Zazzler HaphiStuff, wrote about a group she founded called indiExhibit that helps artists (and fellow Zazzlers) get together and participate in Hollywood gift lounge events.  To learn more about this amazing community started by a fellow Zazzler, be sure to read the full post below.

Steve-O with an iPad Case by Zazzler PsychoClowns

Our first event was the ESPY awards at the Playboy Mansion in LA in 2010.  What a way to start!  Since then, IE has participated in The Golden Globes, The Sundance Film Festival, The Kid’s Choice Awards, and The MTV Movie Awards gift lounge events.  We even had an opportunity to create special swag bags to send to the set of HBOs huge vampire hit True Blood!  The bags were received at the end of their shooting schedule, but we’re eagerly waiting to see some of our members’ items on the set during the last two episodes of the season!  Members have also received the opportunity to create swag bags to be given away to guests on BETs Monique show.  Every month we will supply the show with a quantity of bags filled with goodies created by our members which will be given to the celebrity guests.  We also had an incredible opportunity to create a special bag for legendary director Tim Burton.  Such an amazing chance to get your name and work in front of influential buyers!

Recently, following a spectacular reception at the MTV Movie Awards at the beginning of June, we have been given the opportunity to create special swag bags for MTV’s The Electric Barbarellas, a hot girl group with their own reality show on the music network. We also have some top secret plans for even more exciting special swag opportunities coming soon!

The indiExhibit is growing by leaps and bounds!  We welcome new members daily and continue to grow, not just in number, but as artists and friends.  Crafters and artisans of all types and levels of experience are heartily welcomed into our group.  We look forward to seeing many more of our fellow Zazzlers joining us at The indiExhibit.

More about the indiExhibit:

The indiExhibit is a group of artisans and crafters from around the world who have come together to support and promote one another through a non-profit company.  We offer our members the chance to participate in red carpet Hollywood gift lounge events as well as other exciting swag bag opportunities.  By working together as a group, we not only share the expenses, which would be insurmountable for any of us as individuals, but we broaden our sales scope by incorporating a multitude of product types, design techniques, craft styles and demographics.

Founded in 2010 by Shannon Justice (known as HahpiStuff here on Zazzle), The indiExhibit works as a community; a place where artists of all type are welcome to come and participate at the level they are comfortable with.  Everyone is welcome at IE!  We have tons of Zazzlers, but we also have jewelers, doll makers, sculptors, vocal artists, fashion accessory designers, authors and so many incredible artisans.  We encourage our members to get to know one another through our private Facebook group, which fosters an environment of camaraderie, idea sharing and cooperation.  Some of our members have even come together to collaborate on projects, combining their artistic talents to create something entirely new and share the cost of the event.  It’s a wonderful, fun, nurturing environment.

When it comes time to participate in events, members are given several options for participation to meet both their promotional needs as well as financial ones. Packages range from simply including business cards to providing items for the swag bags and having an item on display.  Swag bags are given to the celebrities who attend the gift lounge event and we also have an option to provide info and products to be given to members of the press who attend these galas.  Members who opt for the display packages will usually get a photo or their product with a celebrity.  These photos can be used by the members for non-paid advertising – which are excellent for their blogs, websites, and other forms of promotion.

You never know what will happen because of one of these shows!  Some of our members have been contacted directly by stars wanting their items.  One of our jewelers sold her display necklace from one show to a member of the press, who then bought her display necklace from the next show before the show even happened!  Sometimes a star will even ask if they can have an item.  At a recent event one star fell in love with a member’s pair of Ked’s and another star went nuts for someone’s skateboard deck.  How can you put a price on being able to say a well-known star has your product?

Shannon and The indiExhibit administration are constantly thinking of new, affordable ways for their members to participate and get the word out about their products.  This month alone, three new projects were rolled out to try and increase exposure and opportunities for our members.

Zazzle Featured Seller Interview with northwestphotos

June 23, 2011

Peggy, from the Zazzle store northwestphotos, talks to us about her photography and her time as a Zazzler.  Check out the interview below and don’t forget to check out her store northwestphotos!

Oriental Garden Print

Bio: I live in the Pacific Northwest state of Washington, a true wonder to itself. Although I’ve been a resident for over 30 years, I was born and raised in western New York. I am currently retired and devoting myself totally to my creative talents and interests.

Zazzle: When you’re not creating art, what are your other hobbies?

Peggy: When I am not creating on Zazzle, I turn my creativity to my love of music and playing piano. I also volunteer my time as an assistant editor and promoter of an author who has featured some of my work in his books. And, of course, I love traveling regionally to capture all those lovely stills out there in nature.

Zazzle: A lot of your works seems to be more photography, when did you start taking photos? Are there other styles of art you enjoy as well?

Peggy: All of my work on Zazzle is created from my stock of nature and landscape photographs. I’ve had a long time interest in photography from my teen years on. I can remember longing for my first 35 mm camera. I always knew that I had an eye for photographing what Mother Nature has to offer. Other than landscape and nature photography, I occasionally like to photograph vintage trains and planes.

Zazzle: What has been your favorite design you’ve created, and why?

Peggy: I would have to say that my favorite design I have created on Zazzle is “Advice from a Mountain,” which is available in two formats: one with a photo image of Mt Rainier, and one with a black silhouette image of Mt Hood. Each image is accompanied by practical advice given by “the mountain.” The items are available as mousepads, greeting cards, T-shirts, and tote bags.

Advice from a Mountain Mousepad

Zazzle: Do you have any fun stories about being a seller on Zazzle?

Peggy: I think the funniest story about my sales on Zazzle is that I seem to sell quite a bit of photo items that are not indicative of the Pacific Northwest, which is what I specialize in. For example, I sell quite a few “east coast” photo items, which I really don’t have much of to begin with. I do travel to other regions and so I try to capture some of those areas’ popular attractions as well as what my own region has to offer.

Zazzle: What’s your favorite Zazzle product to create?

Peggy: My favorite Zazzle products to create are greeting cards. That seems to be the most natural way to show off my nature photographs. I have the most versatility with cards in that I can create many different types of occasion cards, such as birthday cards, thank-you cards, holiday cards, etc. And there’s a little bit more creativity involved with occasion cards in that you have to think up a good verse to include inside some of them. Many of my cards are also blank style cards for customers to creative their own verse if they wish to.

Zazzle: What got you interested in selling your art on Zazzle?

Peggy: I became interested in selling my photo designs on Zazzle a few years ago just before I retired. I wanted something to keep me busy in my retirement years. As well, many friends and family members had been encouraging me for years to market my photo images. I already knew about Zazzle and just had to make up my mind once and for all to try my wings. I like the ease of using Zazzle’s design-creating software and that was the primary reason why I chose Zazzle. I’m glad I did!

Zazzle: What tips can you give someone who is just starting out on Zazzle?

Peggy: For those newbies on Zazzle, I would strongly suggest that they refer to the forums frequently and check out other Zazzler’s store links to help spark their own creativity. Also, keep up with the weekly Zazzle blogs and newsletters for more creative ideas. With many of my own problems I encountered, I found the solutions in the forums and Zazzle’s own instructional videos. People in the Zazzle Community are really great and are eager to share helpful information. If you have a creativity block, take a few days off and then come back and try again. That usually works

Thanks Peggy!
